Acorn Woodpecker
Melanerpes formicivorus

In the county of San Diego this is a common bird that breeds and lives off the acorns of our Oak Trees. They use dead trees, power poles and buildings as granaries. They are most common in the Oak Montane zone but can be seen on the coast and in the artificial habitat of Quail Gardens, Encinitas.
